The Story of Akureyri & Iceland
Akureyri, nestled at the head of Iceland's longest fjord, has served as the cultural and commercial heart of the north since the first Norse settlers arrived in the 9th century. Though its population is small by European standards, the city punches far above its weight — boasting botanical gardens, a thriving arts scene, and a warmth that defies its subarctic latitude.
Iceland itself was settled around 874 AD and forged one of the world's oldest parliamentary democracies, the Althing, in 930 AD. Its unique position on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge means the island is constantly being reshaped — volcanoes erupt, geysers steam, and new lava fields are born. This is a land where fire and ice coexist, where the midnight sun paints the sky amber, and where the Northern Lights dance through long winter nights.
Akureyri Tours was founded by local enthusiasts who grew up watching whales from the shoreline and hiking trails that wind through ancient lava fields. Their mission is simple: to share the authentic north of Iceland — not a postcard version of it — with curious travelers from around the world.
